Welcome to the Peep Show

It’s fall, and Hampshire County has the leaves.

Everybody has pretty leaves in autumn, but you’ll have to trust us when we say that ours are truly out of this world. Except they’re not really out of this world—they’re right here, within a reasonable distance from Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh, and beyond. It’s a weekend getaway waiting to happen, and we’ve done this fall thing before, so whether it’s your first visit or your 20th, let us tell you exactly how it’s going to go down.

The color starts high on the mountains and creeps down into the valleys as the weeks pass. Red maples turn vivid scarlet. Sugar maples also bring reds, along with oranges. Tulip poplars and hickories contribute gold. Then, as the weeks pass, oaks lend bronze and burgundy. And don’t forget sassafras, which can bring all the hues in the same stunning tree.

Fall is usually sunny and dry, and the humidity blows out early in the season, so it’s a perfect time to wander around and take in some history. There’s a lot of it here, since Hampshire was the first county in West Virginia. Be sure to read interpretive signs while the kids get antsy. Then, take them to buy some goodies—maybe The Kettle Stop in Capon Bridge or Hanging Rocks Ice Cream in Romney. If a bigger meal is in order, try Wild Roots Cafe or Main Street Grill.

If you’re into nature, the South Branch Potomac River is a great fall paddle. Now, we can’t promise the smallmouth bass will be jumping in the boat—that part is up to you. But whether by kayak or canoe, the trip is an unforgettable one. Bring a cooler and make a day of it as you float through the steep canyon walls of The Trough, a wild, rugged place where work can’t find you, but you’ll find rocky terrain, forested cliffs, and bald eagles.

If you’d rather sit back, relax, and keep your feet dry, the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad chugs its way through the canyon every day. Look for eagles, look for leaves, and enjoy a fancy dinner if that’s up your alley. There are plenty of ways to enjoy this train ride and, with some advance notice, the staff can make accommodations for travelers with special mobility needs.

Now, here’s the thing—you’re going to be bushed after all that leaf peeping. All peeped out. So don’t go home. Just crash with us. We’ve got so many great places to stay, and whether you’re looking for an upscale resort and spa, a cozy inn, or a private space all your own, we can help.

Mom’s Heide-Way is a four-bedroom retreat just 10 miles from the South Branch River. Tucked into a peaceful rural setting but still just five minutes from town, you’ll find yourself slowing down, playing in the creek, and watching the stars from beside the firepit. Bring a book or a pool noodle and prepare to unplug your brain beside the private pool. This one’s a guest favorite, and we understand why. Mom will love it.

Set high above the North River and bordering a nature conservancy, The Eagle’s Nest is a rustic-luxury retreat surrounded by the wild beauty of Ice Mountain. This 3,000-plus-square-foot chalet sleeps up to 10 and features high ceilings, panoramic two-story windows, and massive stone fireplaces. Spend your fall weekend exploring the mountains, then return to the porch to listen to the river (it’ll probably say something gurgly), gather around the fire, or stargaze Hampshire County’s dark skies.

If you’re looking to truly slow down, this secluded Serenity Mountain View Cabin in the West Virginia hills offers a place to disconnect from the world. Surrounded by the forest with beautiful sunset views, the cabin is designed especially for those seeking to reconnect with nature and themselves. Guests can settle into a dedicated meditation space, follow the walking path for mindful practice, or simply enjoy the stillness of the mountains. A jetted tub adds a touch of comfort at the end of a peaceful day.

It may be small in size, but The Snuggle Shack packs a lot of comfort into its teeny footprint. Cozy up beside the fireplace, soak in the private hot tub, or enjoy a meal prepared in the fully stocked kitchen. The South Branch Potomac River is a short walk away, as are fishing, swimming, and exploring opportunities. And there’s nowhere like a snug little cabin for fall romance. *Wink, wink.*

The South Branch Inn offers a fresh, comfortable stay. It’s family-owned, not corporate and cold. Hang out and enjoy the area or make it a brief stay on your Hampshire adventure. Whatever you’re doing, they’ve got your back. (And your head, too, hence the pillows.) Just trust us—this is a clean and welcoming place to unwind on a great fall adventure.

Head to Capon Springs & Farms if you’re up for a family-style stay where you can play golf, catch a fish, head out on a hike, get a massage, eat a good meal, or just read a book by the pool. We’re talking world-class spa, folks. Your neck and back will thank you.

And of course, we’ve yet to find a cooler vibe than Koolwink Motel. For decades, this simple, family-owned place has had the friendliest atmosphere and coziest rooms. Nearby, antique shops, historic sites, and scenic drives are perfect for poking around. It’s easy, it’s hip, and it’s totally retro. And we love that.

Now dig out your jackets and cameras, because Hampshire County is about to knock your socks off!
