It’s Vacation Time. Take a Ride.

Trains, eagles, and mountain adventure—Hampshire County has it all.

We probably don’t have to tell you that Hampshire County’s spring days are lengthening into a warm and welcoming summer season. Or that the dogwoods and flowering crabapples are blazing. Or that our smallmouth bass are practically jumping into canoes on the South Branch Potomac River.

But in case you need a reminder, here it is: You can’t beat Hampshire County in May for late spring adventure, brilliant green mountains, bluebird days, and quiet walks in the woods. Not to mention our long history, fabulous eats, and local shopping in some pretty hip spots.

But here’s the million-dollar question: Have you ridden the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad? Because we’re pretty proud of this one-of-a-kind experience that blends nature and engineering.

This isn’t just a train ride. It’s a front-row seat to scenery you’d normally hike miles to find. The route winds along the South Branch Potomac River, chugging past farmland, rock cuts, and into a stretch of remote country known as The Trough—a steep, forested canyon that feels wild and rugged.

This is where the bald eagles soar. Out there, in the wild, doing their eagle thing. Some days you’ll see one. Some days, several or many. No matter how many times we see them, we still get excited.

This is an easy and comfortable ride. The classic Trough trip takes about three hours. It’s a full day if you decide to head down to Petersburg for a layover. There’s even a sunset ride if you want to watch the day wind down. And if you like a little comfort with your mountain scenery, you’ve got options—from simple coach seating to full-on dining service in vintage rail cars with dinner served on real china. We think it’s pretty great. (We love the eagles, but if they were in charge, they’d just bring you a dead fish.)

When the train pulls back into the station, remember—you don’t have to go anywhere. Hampshire County is easy to get to. It’s close to D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, and it’s tough to leave. So stay here and check out these great accommodations, all of which are way more comfortable than a nest.

If you want to be right in the middle of it all, Southern Charm Getaway in Romney is your place. You’re within walking distance to restaurants and shops. You can even find yourself in the trenches—the Civil War kind, if you’re feeling historical—and the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad is just a short drive away. It’s comfortable, family-friendly, and set up for a crew that wants to explore by day and settle in at night.

Looking to truly unplug, or maybe just reset your busy brain a little? Bodhi Mountain View Cabin is your spot. This quiet cabin comes with a meditation path, outdoor sitting spaces, and a serene stillness that’s hard to come by these days. Come for a weekend, or stay long enough to forget what day it is. Either way, it’s a different kind of getaway.

If your idea of relaxing includes a hot tub and a jaw-dropping sunset, The Ginger Glamper is your spot. Perched on a hill with a big deck and even bigger West Virginia views, this modern-boho setup is all about slowing down in style. Grill dinner, soak under the stars, and take a few extra peeks at the sky. It’s really something up here. You should see it.

Got a bigger group in tow? Lilac & Laurel at Buffalo Gap Retreat gives you room to spread out without losing that cozy cabin feel. Two mirrored spaces connected into one make it easy for families or friend groups to share the trip but still find some quiet introvert time, too, when needed. Plus, you’ve got a lake, beach, trails, and more right on-site—so you can stay busy or do absolutely nothing at all. Respect the busy time, and respect the chill time.

If you like a little history with your home base, Heart of Romney delivers. This restored classic has all the charm of another era with just the right updates. Walk to dinner, relax in the fenced backyard, and use it as your launch point for river days, train rides, and whatever else you’ve got planned. It’s equal parts convenient and character-filled.

If you’re digging the retro vibe, check out Koolwink Motel. Better yet, check in. For decades, this simple, family-owned place has been the coolest spot with the friendliest atmosphere. Nearby, antique shops, historic sites, and scenic drives are perfect for poking around. It’s easy, it’s hip, and it’s close to the good stuff.

Nearby, the South Branch Inn offers a fresh, comfortable stay with deep local roots. Family-owned and recently remodeled, it’s a spot for hanging out and enjoying the mountains or a home base from which to explore the area. Whatever you’re doing, you’ll find friendly faces and everything you need without the rest of the world’s complications clogging up your weekend. It’s about as welcoming as they come.

And then there’s Capon Springs & Farms, a historic resort where you can whack a ball, catch a fish, go for a hike, read a book, soak in a spring-fed bath, and indulge in a hearty meal. This is a great place to unwind and, honestly, we just might check in ourselves.

If you’ve been thinking about a big vacation, a little trip, a weekend getaway, or a weekday sneakaway (we won’t tell), this is your sign. We just hung it up and the paint is still wet, but we really hope it’ll grab your attention, because we’ve got trains and eagles and green mountains and so many friendly folks waiting to welcome you. Hampshire County isn’t going anywhere, so we really hope you are. Head on over.

See you soon!
