It’s Harvest Festival time in Hampshire County.
It’s one of our favorite times of the year. The mountains are green, the rivers are warm, and the farms are full of flavor. (Ever notice our e-blasts are all about food this time of year?) One of the best things about August in Hampshire County is that Romney will be celebrating the Summer Harvest Festival. The first weekend of August brings this annual three-day celebration honoring the county’s rich agricultural tradition—and pretty much everything else great about this place we call home.
Main Street is the place to be. Local artisans will have their wares on display. Look for handcrafted pottery, woodworking, jewelry, paintings, and other unique creations. Then, browse the farmers market for fresh seasonal produce, enjoy homemade treats from dozens of food vendors, and relax with live music—it’ll be going on throughout the weekend. If you bring the kids, they’ll love the free Kids Zone. There’s also a classic car show, a parade, street dancing, a pie baking contest, and a dog pageant. Yes, you read that right.
The festival also celebrates one of Hampshire County’s longtime agricultural traditions—its peach harvest. While peaches remain a pretty big deal here, the modern event embraces the county’s whole farming community with fresh produce, local businesses, wineries, breweries, and small-town traditions.
When you’re ready for something a little more low-key, The River House in Capon Bridge is the answer. Sure, it’s a great place to stop for a cup of coffee or espresso. And yes, they serve a fabulous homemade pastry. But this isn’t your run-of-the-mill coffee shop—it’s a cultural hub, so plan to take a little time here. The River House showcases a rotating series of art exhibits and handcrafted gifts. You might find a concert, an art or writing workshop, or an open mic. No matter the event, the experience will be local and unique, one to remember.
Outside, the Cacapon River rambles along, so loafers and relaxers will find a great spot to watch the world—and the water—go by. Boaters, bring your kayaks and canoes and launch from the River House into West Virginia’s cleanest river.

Feeling geodesic? Bubble up in the Augusta Glamping Dome. You’ll get mountain views, modern amenities like a full kitchen and bath, heat and air conditioning, plus an unforgettable mountain view that includes a sky full of stars. Not to mention a hot tub from which to see it all. Try this dome life thing.
Hilltop Haven is the coolest tiny home, but somehow, everybody fits. Designed for families and small groups, this three-bedroom retreat includes a hot tub and sauna, an outdoor fire pit, a dining area, and a deck to watch the world from the quiet hillside. There’s on-site camping if you want to invite even more of your crew. Who’s bringing s’mores?
The South Branch Inn offers a fresh, comfortable stay with deep Hampshire County roots. Family-owned, super comfortable, and we love a complimentary breakfast, it’s a mountain getaway perfect for whatever adventure you’re on, even if you’re just passing through. We suggest hanging around, though. It’s pretty cool here.
Capon Springs & Farms is like camp—hit some balls, do a little hiking, enjoy a day in a lounge chair by the pool or get a spa treatment in a spring-fed Roman tub. You get to pick. We’re not sure it’s ever an easy choice, though.
The Koolwink Motel. So retro. So fun. So welcoming. Family-owned for generations, this classic roadside stay is one of Hampshire County’s coolest. It’s clean, it’s comfortable, and it’s both simple and nostalgic. There’s just no reason not to check this place out.
Hampshire County is just a few hours from Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh, so don’t spend another weekend looking at pavement! The corn and tomatoes are waiting.
