It’s summer in Hampshire County, and that means it’s Farm Crawl season! July 11–12, get ready for one of the best ways to experience the area’s agricultural roots firsthand. The Farm Crawl is a self-guided adventure through local farms, flower fields, markets, and agritourism spots across the county. You’ll meet farmers, sample local foods—because it’s eating season—browse handmade products, and see exactly where all this Appalachian goodness comes from. (Hint: right here.)
Snag a Swiss truffle at EH Chocolates & More, where Chef Eric Hott brings European culinary craftsmanship to a quaint farm in Kirby. Spring Valley Farm Market, just outside of Romney, is not only a 200-acre slice of family-run produce heaven, but it’s also a year-round operation. Crops are heated and growing all winter in solar-heated greenhouses.
At the Quicken Farm Stand—the last 10-sided farm stand in Hampshire County—you can pick up something to make for dinner. They’ll have hand-tied brats and sausage as well as baked goods, local honey, and gifts. Then shuffle over to Barefoot Farm for a great selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers.
When you can eat no more, stop by the West Virginia Broom Barn (Saturday only), learn about the time-honored craft of broom making (yep, that’s a thing), and browse handmade products that celebrate Appalachian heritage. And if you’d like to take some of Hampshire County home for the long haul, Abundant Life Nursery has shrubs and trees as well as flowers and produce. And don’t miss their wonderful sunflower garden—it’s ridiculously cheerful.
